Cancer to Thriving

Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Celeste Bailey, a lovely woman who was reeling after a second cancer diagnosis.  I asked her to share her story with you all.

It’s an important read because so many of us don’t make changes to our health until we have a medical scare.

We want to inspire you to make health changes now.  As Celeste can attest, without your health, life can be difficult.

Here is Celeste in her own words:

I am so grateful that I was led to The Plant Partners for a positive life style change that has been life-saving for me.  Last year I met with Catherine to help me learn more about the whole-food plant based diet.

What led me to Catherine was the scary word “cancer”.  I was diagnosed with a more aggressive type of uterine cancer in 2015.  I was 52 years old at the time.  This diagnosis led to conventional treatment of surgery and radiation therapy.

During my recovery, my son and husband led me to search for natural ways to improve my health.  I watched the movie “Forks over Knives” and ‘The Truth about Cancer”.  I went to a naturopathic doctor who introduced me to many, many supplements.  I read books like “Beating Cancer with Nutrition”.  I became very overwhelmed with all of the information that I read.

I did choose to modify my diet but it was not even close to whole-food plant based.  I had been still eating small amounts of meat and using oil generously when I roasted vegetables as well as eating eggs regularly.  It is no surprise (but it was to me) that the cancer came back a second time, only just over a year from my original diagnosis.

This cancer was growing rapidly.  I was scared.  I wanted quick action.  I chose to complete 5 months of chemotherapy.  Additionally, I chose to juice (4 to 5 glasses) daily using the recipes from “The Gerson Therapy” protocol.  [For those of you who do not know about Gerson, it is a very specific protocol of juicing, vitamins, and food that has cancer killing abilities.]

The doctors were amazed at how well I was responding and I had very little side effects from the chemo.  In July 2017, the cancer was gone once again.

So, after my second wake up call.  I became much more serious about nutrition.  I read more about  “Gerson Therapy”.  Although this program was very effective for cancer, for various reasons I decided not to take this route.  I definitely became more aware of the fact that nutrition saves lives.

As I was still searching, I happened to talk to Catherine’s sister Barbara who lives near me.  She told me that her sister is helping people with nutrition.  I met with Catherine and became very excited and motivated for a life style change.

I have been on a whole food plant based diet for a year.  I have lost another 15 pounds and I am keeping it off!

Thankfully the transition to a whole-food plant based diet was fairly easy for me. I was very motivated to make my body healthy so that cancer could not return a third time…ever!

I have a wonderful collection of recipes that I have gathered on my own and from Plantluck dinners.  Catherine has given me support and knowledge and resources to help me understand how important a whole-food plant based diet is for our health.

This diet, as well as, exercise and good mental health is the key to keeping my immune system strong.  For me, a big part of my healing was my faith and faith community.  All of this works together.

There is no “magic bullet” and there are no guarantees. But I feel, at this time in my life, this life style is the most effective way to keep the cancer away. I continually encourage my family to adopt this life style as well.

I feel the healthiest that I have ever felt, even before the cancer.  I have been cancer free for just over one year and expect to stay cancer free.  It has been an amazing journey and would not have changed anything that I have experienced….not even the cancer.

The cancer made me choose  LIFE.  Please don’t wait for a health scare to adopt this life style…just do it!

Alive and thriving,

Celeste Bailey
